Interstellate is back and better than ever! A year after the launch of Volume 1, the second volume debuted in November 2018, both digitally and in hardcopy at the Society for Neuroscience conference in Washington DC.
Zooming in and out
The second science x art installation uses the concept of scaling factors to explore brain anatomy and function. Each chapter starts with a written perspective piece introducing the topic and is accompanied by a work of art from several contributing artists - including Carlos Aizenman, Trinley Dorje, and Elizabeth Jameson. Volume 2 begins on a macro scale. Chapter 1 introduces the importance neuroscience research in its many forms - why do we study the brain and how? In the second chapter, neuroscience is discussed on a systems level and explains how information in our environment is integrated into our brain. Once inside the brain, Interstellate travels from 5x to 100x exploring its cellular composition, organization, and communication. The final chapter (MAYDAY!) touches upon several common neuropsychiatric disorders (i.e., addiction, depression, Alzheimer's Disease) and what we know about these conditions.
Society for Neuroscience (SfN) 2017
Interstellate teamed up with our sponsors to support the printing and distribution of 1300 free Volume 2 hardcopies at SfN - the largest neuroscience conference in the world! Our platinum sponsor, ThermoFisher Scientific, graciously gave us space at their booth to distribute the copies. It was so much fun hanging out with the ThermoFisher Team and meeting Interstellate fans - thank you ThermoFisher!! Interstellate also supplied some prints to our gold sponsor Inscopix for their community reception. It was stunning to see the images displayed in an art gallery setting in large format! Finally, Interstellate collaborated with silver sponsor DRVISION to sponsor a Travel Award Image contest - congrats to the winners! Big thanks to Two Photon Art, Pasquale D'Silva, & Crystal Lantz for assistance!
